Radiolarian is an inflatable scale model of a microscopic ocean dwelling organism of the same name. Radiolarians are single celled organisms that create a silica exoskeleton that is radially symmetric. They drift with the ocean currents and are a unique species that use photosynthesis as well as eating other smaller organisms. Radiolarian, the art project, is an inflatable and mobile replica of this microscopic creature, sitting on an electric wheelchair base. Radiolarian is made of over 1,800 pieces of laser cut ripstop fabric and 573 LEDs.

Chromatic Corridor, created by Jean Besstte-Tyler with technical direction from Shiny Design Lab, is a 13 foot long tunnel made with 7776 LEDs and 288 white pool noodles, and run with 12 PixelBlaze controllers over external WiFi. The entire tunnel is covered in white fur inside and out. Participants are encouraged to walk through the tunnel to experience the dancing lights and patterns of the Chromatic Corridor.

Jelly Bar was created for FATHOM by Roboto Octopodo. Made from a cigar box bought at a thrift store, this upcycled art featured 3D printed furniture, miniature jellyfish, dollhouse food, and custom neon-sign-inspired LED lighting.

Slimy Baby was a playful character designed for Fathom by Roboto Octopodo. A creation of whimsy and chaos, Slimy Baby became a primary character within Fathom, inspiring scavenger hunts and lore.

Baba Yaga’s Window was designed and installed for SOAK*2025 as a part of the Major Burnable Structure, Baba Yaga’s House. The window features 8 layers of clear, edge lit acrylic, laser etched with 8 successive designs. A descendant of Ukrainian immigrants, the artist was inspired by Slavic folk art relating to the story of Baba Yaga. The imagery features a witch’s broom as a nose, chicken-firebird eyes, poisonous plants, and children’s teeth, all key components of the Baba Yaga oral tradition.

Wavy Wacky Guys was an installation created for FATHOM by Roboto Octopodo. Inspired by Scenario’s idea to make “a room full of wacky wavy inflatable tube men”, Wacky Wavy Guys were built to resemble anemone in the ocean. Each anemone was hand dyed, sewn, and attached to 5v computer fans that were activated by an infrared sensor. When people walked by or started dancing in front of the Wacky Wavy Guys, the fans would turn on and the anemone would start dancing.

A 2025 Maker Faire Editor’s Choice winner, DDXXL (Dimensional Dreams XXL) is an enlarged version of Dimensional Dreams: Coral Reef. This 4ft wide by 4ft tall shadow box stands 6ft tall on thick steel pipe legs. Enlarging Coral Reef allows viewers to see the details of the coral and fish in depth. This new box is made of 10 white acrylic layers, with 3 clear laser etched layers with over 10 species of tropical sea creatures. The clear etched layers sit directly on top of the LEDs, creating an illusion that the fish are suspended within the box. The LED animations developed for this box gives the appearance of fish swimming.

One of the most calming environments I’ve experienced is snorkeling on a reef. The gentle waves of the water as fish swim around, the crunching of a parrotfish eating coral, the curious nooks and crannies to look into. The water is warm, the sun beaming down, as I’m immersed into a foreign environment. Snorkeling is deeply relaxing to me.

Slimy Baby Nest was designed for Fathom by Roboto Octopodo. One of Fathom’s “Ooze Tubes”, the Slimy Baby Nest was an interactive installation that participants walked inside of. The 10ft tall by 3ft wide metal tube was large enough for people to stand inside of, and when a doorbell was pressed, the Slimy Babies inside woke up, rattled, made various noises, and the Slimy Baby Mana changed colors. This project was a collaboration between Becca Priddy (design and creation), Wiz (motors and controllers), and Jean Bessette-Tyler (sound design). The project ran on a Teensy controller with octo break out for sound and servos and used over 100 2812b LEDs.

DIYMBS (Do It Yourself Major Burnable Structure) was designed for SOAK*2020. Originally designed for the 2020 SOAK event, building was delayed to the pandemic. DIYMBS was finally built in 2022. DIYMBS was designed to match the theme “Some Assembly Required” and was a large scale puzzle. It was a 15ft³ cube shaped structure made of eighty 3³ft cubes. Each 3³ft cube had one plywood face with a design cut out of it with CNC. When assembled correctly, each small cube contributed to a larger mandala design on the full 15²ft cube. Each face had a theme: Pacific NW, Portland, Black Rock City, and the fourth side was a dedication to Nickie Bee, a local artist and maker. Building DIYMBS was a collaborative effort of a group of local Burning Man volunteers. Assembling DIYMBS required SOAK event participants to find hidden 3³ft cubes throughout the event, bring them up a hill to the platform, and find the correct spot for each piece to fit. At the end of the event, DIYBMS was burned. The artist worked with the fire safety and pyrotechnics team to make DIYMBS look like a lantern glowing from within as the burn progressed.

Zooplankton was built in 2015 for Burning Man. Inspired by the drawings of Victorian biologist, Earnst Haeckel, Zooplankton was a 25,000:1 scale model of a microscopic radiolarian. The project was built by volunteers over a span of 6 months, with funding from Ignition Northwest and Precipitation Northwest, as well as an Indigogo campaign. Zooplankton featured 100 acrylic spikes that had custom lighting PCBs designed by Paul Stoffregen, and LEDs installed with custom animations designed by Tony Rieker. The structure stood 25ft tall and 15ft wide. Participants could go inside the structure where they could view a gallery of work by Earnst Haeckel as well as look through a microscope at real specimen of a radiolarian. Zooplankton had a controlled burn designed by Phuz and Foxfur.

The Superstition Mountains in Arizona hold a special place in my heart. Growing up in Phoenix, these mountains were just to the east. Sitting on the Lost Dutchman Trail you can look westward for what seems like forever, overlooking Phoenix and the surrounding cities. In the spring, this area blooms with orange Californa Poppies, pink ocotillo flowers, and yellow barrel cactus blossoms. The sunsets here are bright orange pink and red, the clouds like flames above the desert.
